Farer is an independent British brand founded in 2015 that designs colourful, vintage-inspired watches in England and has them made in Switzerland. Known for bold dial colours, bronze crowns and explorer-themed names, it sells directly online and from an appointment-only showroom near Ascot. Most automatics cost roughly €1,300 to €2,500.

Historia

Farer was founded in 2015 by Paul Sweetenham, Ben Lewin, Jono Holt, a co-founder of Shore Projects, and Stuart Finlayson. The name comes from seafarer and wayfarer. Sweetenham has described the team as design people coming to watches rather than watch people coming to design. Design took five months and production development another 14, and Farer launched in 2015 with a line of nine Swiss-made quartz watches, sold online and through Selfridges in London.

Mechanical watches followed in September 2016 with three automatics, the Hopewell, Beagle and Endurance, named after historic ships. They used the ETA 2824-2 and a solid bronze crown intended to patina, and the Hopewell cost $1,075. In May 2017 three GMT models, the Lander, Oxley and Ponting, named after British explorers, added an ETA 2893 for £1,250. September 2017 brought the Aqua Compressor divers, with twin crowns, an internal rotating bezel and 300 m water resistance.

In 2018 Farer introduced 37 mm hand-wound watches in cushion cases. In 2019 it released quartz watches themed on land speed records, such as the Ainsdale and Pendine Sands, and later that year chronographs named after record holders Ernest Eldridge, John Cobb and Henry Segrave. The later Monopusher GMT combined a single-pusher chronograph with a second time zone on a modified Sellita SW530 with 62 hours of reserve, priced at £1,995. Farer sells only through its website and its showroom near Ascot.

Bronze crowns meant to age

From its first automatics in 2016, Farer fitted solid bronze crowns to steel cases, so the crown develops a patina while the case stays bright.
